Biographical Sketch: Frank L. Powell, Ph.D.

Dr. Frank L. Powell is a physiologist and Professor of Medicine at UC San Diego, where he has been since 1980. He obtained his Ph.D. in comparative and respiratory physiology at UC Davis in 1978 and did pre and post-doctoral training at the Max Planck Institute for Experimental Medicine in Gottingen, Germany. His early research focused on respiratory gas exchange in birds and especially the mechanisms that allow birds to perform better than mammals at high altitude. This research program utilized the University of California's high altitude laboratories at White Mountain Research Station and Powell was appointed director of WMRS in 1995.

Currently, his research focuses on physiological acclimatization and genetic adaptations to chronic hypoxia, especially in the neural systems that control breathing in humans and other vertebrates.

Currently Powell teaches organ and systemic physiology to UCSD medical students (Organ Physiology SOM 206) and Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. students (Systemic Physiology, BMS 213). He also has a strong interest in educational outreach and interdisciplinary education. He helped to start K-12 outreach programs at the American Physiological Society when he chaired their Education Committee. Powell is chairing the Local Organizing Committee for the 35th Congress of the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) in San Diego, CA., March 31 - April 5, 2005.
